After losing in playoff last year, Broughton's Fountain enters 4A golf final as a favorite - HighSchoolOT

— The N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys golf state championship will be held on Monday and Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 8.

Last year’s champion, A.J. Beechler of Pinecrest, graduated with the Class of 2018, but there are a number of top golfers returning to the state championship this year.

Among the favorites going into the two-day tournament is Broughton’s Peter Fountain, who finished second behind Beechler in the state championship last year, losing the championship in a playoff. Beechler carded a four on the 18th hole, the first playoff hole, while Fountain scored a one-over-par five.

Fountain won the 4A East regional title last week at The Emerald Golf Club in New Bern, posting a 70 — three strokes better than Randall Hudson and Jack Towarnicky of New Bern.

Myers Park’s Thomas Eubanks finished third at the state championship last year, one stroke behind Beechler and Fountain. Eubanks will be back this season after winning the 4A West regional championship by one stroke over Ardrey Kell’s Graham Chase. Eubanks posted a 69, one better than Chase who finished tied for 11th at states in 2018.

2019 REGIONAL RESULTS

Cameron Whitney of Ardrey Kell, Alex Heffner of Hickory Ridge, and Thomas Deal of Hough all finished tied for fourth in the 2018 state championship. Whitney tied Luke Hackworth of Myers Park for third place in the West regionals last week, and Heffner won the 4A Midwest regional by one stroke over Kieren Smith of East Forsyth. Deal graduated last spring.

Spencer Oxendine of Jack Britt dominated the 4A Mideast regional last week, winning the title by six strokes over second-place Zach Roberts of Holly Springs. Oxendine shot a 66 at the 12 Oaks Golf Course in Holly Springs. Last year at states, Oxendine finished tied for seventh with Chris Sperrazza of Cardinal Gibbons and Symon Balbin of Pinecrest.

Roberts finished second at the mideast regionals with a 72. He was in a seven-way tie for 31st at states last year. Sperrazza was tied for third at regionals this year.

Pinehurst No. 8 will be set as a par 72 for the 4A state championships, totaling 6,694 yards. The course features four par-3 holes, evenly split between the front and back nine. There are also four par-5 holes, the longest being the sixth hole which is listed at 585 yards.
