Best Golf Gear And Golfing Upgrades For 2019 - Forbes

Picking the perfect golf clubs is hard, picking the right shafts is even harder. But both are easy when you do a custom fitting with Club Champion, which carries a huge selection and analyzes your swing for the best match.

Two Majors down and two to go for those who enjoy watching golf on TV, but for those who enjoy playing, peak season is just getting started and there’s a lot more to come. If you want to make this a better year for golf, or maybe you need a gift for a golfer on your list, here are a few highlights of the latest and greatest for 2019.

The TaylorMade irons Tiger Woods won the Masters with just went on sale to the general public and they are red hot.

TaylorMade Golf

Tiger Sticks: When Tiger Woods won the Masters last month it was the biggest golf news of the year. Actually, it was the biggest golf news in several years, capping a two-step forward, one-step back comeback that needed a Major win for emphasis, despite the fact that the world’s most famous athlete won the extremely competitive 2018 Tour Championship and had seven Top-10 finishes in an abbreviated 2018 campaign. Anyway, what has been widely called the greatest comeback in the history of sports is now complete after a 10-year Major drought, and if you want to know what clubs propelled Tiger to his fifth green jacket, he was playing a bag full of TaylorMade sticks including the M5 driver. That’s not surprising given that the company has been the driver of choice on Tour (and in my bag) for years. The bigger twist was the new P7TW irons, which have only been available to consumers since May 1. They are forged muscle back blade-style irons with milled grind soles and tungsten weighting for flight control, and as Woods himself noted, “Consumers have never had the opportunity to play irons like mine…until now.” The irons are coveted and red hot, initially available only for righthanders, with the 3 through pitching wedge set running a cool $2000. They come with True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 Tour Issue shafts and Golf Pride’s Tour Velvet Cord grips, but will also be available through TaylorMade’s custom program, allowing for numerous additional custom shaft and grip options.

Perfect Fit: If you care more about your own game than what Tiger plays, there is no better way to buy clubs than going the custom fitting route. Past studies have shown that as many as four out of five golfers are playing drivers with the wrong loft, and teaching pros I’ve spoken to have claimed that as many as 97% of all recreation golfers play clubs ill-fitted for their size and swing. All golf clubs have five key variables, lie angle, loft, shaft length, shaft flex, and grip size. When you buy off the rack golf clubs - which the vast majority of golfers do - they are typically average-average-average-average-average. The chances that you are so perfectly average in every way is miniscule. It’s akin to taking the national averages for waist size, inseam, collar, chest, and sleeve length buying any old 3-piece suit and outfit and expecting it to fit everyone. I’ve written in great detail about why fitting is so important here before (Read This!).

Club Champion also does putter fittings using the SAM PuttLab, the golf industry's gold standard.

Club Champion

None of this has changed but what has changed is that it has become much easier and better to get fitted for custom clubs than ever before, thanks to Club Champion. Club Champion is the number one brand-agnostic custom club fitter, meaning they measure you with the best high-tech analysis and fit you for the very best clubs and shafts for you, regardless of the name on them. If on the other hand you get fit by a club maker, they will sell you their clubs. Club Champion also has highly skilled full-time club fitters, who unlike big box store employees do nothing else, and they use the gold standards in technology, the same devices most PGA Tour players swear by, the Trackman launch analyzer for full swings and the famed SAM (Science & Motion) PuttLab putting analyzer. They build the clubs themselves to exacting tolerances, carry all the best brands, and fit your swing against a detailed database to select the best shafts, the hardest thing in the world for regular golfers to choose. Club Champion has more than 40 studios nationwide, in all the big cities, and more than twenty new ones under construction. A full bag fitting, putter to driver and everything in between, is just $350, but you can also do just driver, just putter, long game clubs, wedges or fairway woods from $100. The cost of the clubs depends on which heads and shafts you select.

The brand new Bushnell Pro XE is the best laser rangefinder on the market.

Bushnell

Best New Laser Rangefinder: I personally prefer lasers to GPS, because while GPS is great when it works, laser works anywhere, anytime, with no charging, no downloading course maps, playing courses that haven’t been mapped, or losing spotty GPS signal under cloud cover. The new Bushnell Pro XE Golf Laser Rangefinder is the best yet from the best company in the industry, and for over a decade Bushnell has been the number one choice on the PGA Tour (and all other major professional golf tours). Just released, the Pro XE has a slope function that adjusts the playing distance based on uphill or downhill altitude gain or loss, but is also the first device ever with “atmospheric adjustment,” compensating for temperature and barometric conditions, telling you exactly how far you need to hit each shot under any conditions. It is also the first and only rangefinder on the market with 7X magnification, making it easier to see and hit the pin, and it can register even a standard non-reflective flag from over 500 yards out - with accuracy within one yard. This new model now has visual confirmation of lock-on in the viewfinder, in addition to a physical buzz, while with most other brands, if you miss the flag you get an erroneous distance reading from things behind the green, but don’t know it. Also new to the XE is “Bite Cart Mount,” a magnetic mount built into the shell, so it sticks firmly to the vertical roof pole in a golf cart without a case or straps for super quick and convenient access, and it is fully waterproof. Finally, because the XE is one of the few models on the market with an on/off switch for slope, it is legal for both recreational and tournament play under USGA rules ($550).

Small enough to fit in your pocket but big enough to change your golf game for the better, FlightScope is the personal radar ball flight tracker.

FlightScope

Personal Golf Analyzer: Want to train like a Tour player? Then you need a flight tracker, since just about everyone on Tour uses one. The bottom line is that you cannot improve without feedback and really knowing what your shots are doing, and that’s why many of the world’s best use these devices, in some cases splurging for the top of the line Trackman mentioned above (Club Champion). But many also go the FlightScope route, including Bryson DeChambeau and Bubba Watson, and for recreational use and a more palatable price tag, it is hard to beat the FlightScope mevo at just $500 - and so widely available you can get it from Amazon. It can fit into your pocket and uses 3D Doppler radar to accurately record eight different, real-time data parameters: Carry distance, Spin axis, Vertical launch angle, Ball speed, Club speed, Smash factor, Apex height and Flight time. Many competitive products costs thousands of dollars more.

The best smartwatch that is also a GPS golf watch - the new Garmin Galaxy.

Samsung

Best Sports Smartwatch: Many top tech sites like Techradar picked the Galaxy as the best S smartwatch of 2019 overall, or like Warable, best for sports, while just about everyone picked it as the best Android option, period. There’s a lot to like about the latest and greatest smartwatch, especially the fact that it looks and feels like a not so smart watch, complete with traditional display, moving second hand and even ticking. It’s got a great display for the brightest sun or cloudiest days, among the best battery life out there, and hosts of features from music to hands free phone to fitness tracking, complete with Strava, altimeter, barometer, 39 sport specific modes, swim-worthy waterproofness and heartrate. The new Galaxy Watch Active smartwatch also has the Golf Navi Pro, a GPS based system covering more than 60,000 courses worldwide with no downloads needed, including almost every single one you could imagine playing. Among other features, it shows green distances to the front, middle and back, offers altitude adjustment for each course, and much more. Bottom line is that if you want one do-it-all device for on and off the course, this is it.

Cool looking and comfy, John Ashworth's new Linksoul brand is about the golf lifestyle, on and off the course.

Linksoul

New Old Clothes: Few names in the golf apparel industry are more venerable than John Ashworth, who reinvented the industry with a combination of high-performance and classic good looks three decades ago with his eponymous Ashworth label. Now he’s launched LinkSoul, to bring soul and style back to an industry that has become tech fabric and wicking obsessed. The LinkSoul lineup utilizes the best and softest cotton fabrics available to get the kind of drape you can’t get with synthetics, and as such, it is golf lifestyle clothing that is just as perfect off the course. In fact, I wear my LinkSoul stuff more when traveling than teeing it up, but it’s really sharp, and really comfy either way. LinkSoul, whose motto is “Make Par Not War,” has a full collection of pants, shorts, shirts, and weatherproof outerwear, as well as non-golf stuff like hybrid board/travel/swim trunks, tees, long sleeve button down the front shirts, and much more.

Ecco has long been the leader in the cool yet comfortable golf shoe category, and they just keep getting better.

Ecco

New Old Shoes: A few years ago Ecco changed the way golfers don footwear with skate styled shoes that offer the comfort of sneakers with a much sharper look, and while every other company now makes a version. I still like Ecco the best, especially given that they are a venerable European footwear company entirely built around being ultra-comfortable. Ecco makes a lot of different great golf shoes for men and women, but I’m a fan of the now classic M Golf Soft collection ($170) in tons of colors, including brand new options.
