Golf tip: Try for downward strike with your fairway woods - TCPalm

Q: Hi Daril, I am inconsistent with my fairway woods. Most of the time I position the ball just inside my left heel until that doesn't work anymore. Then, I position it in the middle of my stance. Help.

A: The first thing most golfers do with their fairway woods is try to sweep the ball off the fairway, and that is where the trouble begins. The fairway woods have to be swung with a descending strike.

Trackman, which is one of the best launch monitors on the market, did studies of tour pros using their fairway woods. The studies showed every one of them created a downward strike on the ball, from 1 degree to 5 degrees down. The average was 3 degrees down with fairway woods.

What happens is that you position the ball too far forward in your stance, tilt your shoulders too much, creating this position for you to try sweeping the ball off the fairway.

This is causing you hang back on your right side, and by doing this you swing up on the ball and top it or hit that line drive that never gets higher than five feet off the ground.

Try this drill. Take your setup to the ball, get a little wider than your iron stance, feel the weight 60 percent on your right side. When you make your downswing swing, focus on putting pressure in your left heel and swing through.

By doing this you will have more weight going forward, creating more of a downward strike. With a little practice, your fairway wood and you will be on speaking terms again.

Have fun and enjoy the game.
