Head Coach: Dan Larsen, second year
Last Season: no golfers qualified for the state meet
Key Returners: Austin Gerber, Sr.; Ryan Kotz, Sr.; Lance Fullenwider, Jr.; Myles Galbraith, Jr.
Golfers to Watch: Chase Gerber, Fr.
Very rarely does a golf team return four experienced, veteran players at the high school level in back-to-back years. But that’s just what Coal Ridge boys golf is doing this fall in the second year under head coach Dan Larsen, who also serves as Coal Ridge’s head baseball coach in the spring.
Back this fall for the Titans and Larsen are seniors Ryan Kotz and Austin Gerber, as well as juniors Lance Fullenwider and Myles Galbraith, giving the Titans a ton of depth and experience to work with in a wide open 3A Western Slope League.
Despite missing out on sending a representative to the state meet last fall, the Titans are hoping to get a player or two, maybe even the entire team, into the state tournament under Larsen.
“We should do well this year,” Larsen said. “Our league is so wide open right now, so as a team we should be right in the mix. I don’t think we can qualify as a team for state, but we’ll have a shot, and we hope to send one or two boys to the state tournament this year.”
With Kotz and Gerber back carrying the load for the golf team, the Titans could realistically send both to the state tournament after the two seniors saw their games rapidly develop last fall.
“The growth in their short games has been great to see,” Larsen said. “They were getting a lot better last year in that area in terms of saving shots and not quiting on some shots out on the course, so having those two back is huge.”
