Detectives believe the body of an unidentified elderly woman found near the Alhambra Golf Course on Friday afternoon is that of a San Gabriel woman who had been missing since Tuesday, authorities said.
On Wednesday, San Gabriel police announced they were searching for Shu Lan Chao, 71, of San Gabriel. Chao was last seen on Tuesday evening about 10:30 p.m. Family members said she has dementia and other health conditions. She left with no wallet or cell phone.
Though authorities have not yet positively identified the body found in Alhambra on Friday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department released a statement Friday evening mentioning the possible connection.
Alhambra police received a call to check on a woman who was seen near a flood canal at the golf course in the 600 block of Almansor Street about 12:30 p.m., said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who is assisting the Alhambra Police Department in the investigation.
Once there, officers found an unconscious elderly woman lying along the canal. She was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Foul play was not suspected in the woman’s death, said Lt. Derrick Alfred of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The exact cause of her death was pending an autopsy from the coroner’s office.
Alhambra police declined to comment.
The Alhambra Golf Course is inside Almansor Park. The body found Friday is the second woman found dead at or near the park in the past several months.
In December, a city maintenance worker found the body of Hui Li, 59, of Alhambra, lying face down in a duck pond at the park. Li’s cause of death is still under investigation.
