PANAMA CITY, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The Florida State Women’s Golf Team, which has played in each of the last four NCAA Championship Finals, opens it spring 2020 season as it faces Virginia in a dual match at Bay Point Golf Club on Sunday, February 2. The match against the Cavaliers gives both teams an early barometer for the upcoming season as match play is included in the ACC Championship for the first time this season.
“This is a great way to tee of the season,” said Seminole Head Coach Amy Bond. “It’s gives us an opportunity to compete in match play – something we don’t get to do very often. Our coaching staff and the Virginia coaching staff are very excited to being our seasons this way. It’s a great way for both of our teams to begin our season-long preparations for the ACC Championship.”
The Seminoles and the Cavaliers will both play with six players in the Seminoles’ first dual match since April 7, 2017 when the Seminoles defeated Florid by a 3-2 score in a match played at Southwood in Tallahassee.
Each of the team’s six golfers will participate in two rounds of golf beginning Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The event begins with a greensome competition during which players will hit a tee shot and complete the hole with each player alternating shots until the hole is complete. The afternoon will see each six twosomes in match play for 18 holes.
The morning greensome competition will be worth three points and the afternoon match play duals scored as a point each for six total points. The first team to five points will earn the team championship.
The Seminoles will send seniors Amanda Doherty and Sandra Sonalen, junior Kathleen Sumner and sophomores Puk Lyng Thomsen, Beatrice Wallin and Amelia Williamson inti the competition against the Cavaliers.
“We are all excited to play Virginia on Sunday,” said Doherty, who has accepted an invitation to play in the Augusta National Women’s Championship for the second consecutive year in April. “We don’t get to play match play very often, so this is a good chance for us to play some matches before the ACC Championship. This is also a great opportunity for us to get some competition rounds on the Bay Point course before the Florida State Match-Up at the end of the month.”
For Florida State, Sunday’s match against Virginia serves as dual role for it season.
Not only will they open their season against an ACC team that will certainly be one of the top teams in the conference throughout the season, but the Seminoles will play the course that will host the Florida State Match-Up – the jewel of their spring 2020 schedule – at the end of February (February 29-March 1).
“Competing against Virginia to open the season is a win-win for both teams,” said Bond. “This event will begin to show each team where it stands as both of us approach the traditional beginning of our seasons in a couple of weeks. It also allows our players to play Bay Point which is a beautiful course and the host of our tournament later this month.
“It’s been a long winter, and we are all looking forward to playing rather than practicing. This is an exciting way to begin the season. We are eagerly anticipating playing golf on Sunday morning.”
