Reading a green is an art and every golfer has his or her unique technique.
The old standard, plumb bob, the one-eye look, then the other eye look and sometimes the “lay on the ground peak.” Please keep it simple.
Usually, the first look is the correct read.
As you walk up to the green, get a good look at the contour more than looking at the grass. Unless you are a scratch player or a professional, you are most likely not going read the grass correctly. Just read the contour of the green. Look for humps and valleys and imagine you are going to roll a ball with your hand to the hole, use some imagination.
For example, if it’s a long putt, imagine there is a two-foot circle around the hole, and you’re going to lag the ball inside the ring.
If it’s a downhill putt look for a spot short of the hole and putt the ball to that spot. If it’s an uphill putt, aim past the hole as if the hole was further away.
A person who putts well has one of two strengths: good speed or proper direction. If you have both, then you are blessed.
Don’t forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
