The quest by a group of Marin residents to force the reopening of the San Geronimo Valley Golf Course appears to have failed.
With all the ballots cast on Tuesday counted, Measure D had received just under 42% of the vote; it needs a majority to pass. There are some vote by mail and provisional ballots that remain to be counted, but more than 9,000 of the 58,163 cast were no on D.
Measure D would prevent Marin County from “changing the primary golf course use of San Geronimo Valley Golf Course without voter approval,” by amending the San Geronimo Valley Community Plan “to require voter approval for any change in the primary golf course use.”
Supporters of Measure D said it would cause the current owner of the former 157-acre golf course property to reopen the course. But that owner, the Trust for Public Land (TPL), said even if Measure D passed all it would do is “freeze the property in a state of fallow and limbo with no necessary direction.”
Marin County Supervisor Dennis Rodoni said, “Hopefully this will clear the way for some additional planning work by the Trust for Public Land to figure out what is next for the property. I don’t think anyone at this point has any preconceived notions. It will allow them to move forward and that’s a good thing.”
The seed for Measure D was sown in November 2017 when the Marin County Board of voted to purchase the San Geronimo Valley Golf Course for public recreational use and preservation of habitats for endangered salmon at the site. Fearing that the property would be purchased by a private entity before it could act, the county recruited TPL to buy it. The county contracted to purchase the golf course from TPL for $8.85 million by December 2018, or December 2019 at the latest.
The county’s purchase, however, was scuttled by a lawsuit filed by San Geronimo Advocates, a group of residents seeking to preserve the golf course. As part of its legal filing, San Geronimo Advocates asserted that the San Geronimo Valley Community Plan requires that the property remain a golf course, but Marin Superior Court Judge Paul Haakenson rejected that argument. The advocates then gathered 12,000 signatures to quality Measure D for the ballot.
