North Olmsted spends $125,000 on two new Springvale Golf Course mowers - cleveland.com

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- For those duffers needing respite from the coronavirus pandemic, Springvale Golf Course is open for business.

North Olmsted City Council recently approved the purchase of two new mowers that will keep the fairways and roughs trimmed for years to come. The city purchased both a $63,000 Toro 5510-D Reelmaster Mower from Century Equipment, as well as a $62,000 Jacobson HR600 Rotary Mower from Baker Vehicle Systems.

“These purchases were put in the budget last year,” Springvale Golf Course Superintendent Bret Smith said. “The estimated lifetime for mowers is between four and six years, but it all depends on how much you use them and how much ground and surface area you have.

“We have 230 acres and 75 percent of it is rough, so my guys are out there every day. In spring and fall, we can’t keep up."

Speaking of the rough, Springvale’s current 2011 mower has more than 3,000 hours, which usage-wise equates to nearly 200,000 miles on a car. Smith said the Jacobson HR600 Rotary Mower has an 11.5-foot cut with wings on the side.

As for cutting fairways, Smith said the golf course’s current unit was purchased used in 2008 and currently has more than 3,200 hours.

Smith said the Jacobson mower was recently delivered with the Toro expected to be received this spring.

“Last year we went through a ton of mowers with my guys doing (test) cuts,” Smith said. “They were happy with the Toro and Jacobson, which are basically the same price. We did get both at state bid, which is cheaper than normal golf courses because we’re a municipality.”

Mayor Kevin Kennedy noted the mower purchases were part of the Springvale Golf Course’s five-year plan.

“Right now, the golf course is open,” Kennedy said. “That’s one of the few things that’s open. We want to keep it as beautiful as possible and give people a way to get outside and do something.”
