Blick shoots 63, earns Web starts after having clubs stolen

A nightmare start turned into one of the most satisfying days of Cody Blick’s career.

Before the final round of Web.com Tour Q-School, with an outside shot at securing guaranteed starts on the developmental circuit for 2019, Blick discovered that his clubs had been stolen. Around noon ET Sunday, less than two hours before his tee time, the 25-year-old offered $5,000 on Instagram to anyone with information about his missing sticks. No leads.

So Blick headed to the tee with the superintendent’s driver, wedges from the pro shop and a different putter … and then shot a 9-under 63 Sunday to crack the all-important top 40 and earn eight guaranteed starts on the Web.com Tour next year.

“This is the weirdest week of my life, hands down,” he told tour officials afterward, “but the best week.”

Scores at Whirlwind Golf Club’s Cattail course in Chandler, Ariz., were ridiculously low all week, and the final round was no exception. Starting on the back nine, Blick ripped off three birdies in a row on Nos. 12-14 and added a birdie on 18 to make the turn in 32. Needing to keep the pedal down on the inward nine to make the cut, he opened with two straight birdies and then made three in a row to finish to polish off his bogey-free round.

At 19-under 269, Blick tied for 25th, a shot inside the number to earn at least some guaranteed status. He began the day, without his usual clubs, in a tie for 74th.

Blick, who played collegiately at San Jose State, toiled this year on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada. Now, improbably, he’s one step closer to the PGA Tour.
