ANN ARBOR, MI -- An Ohio-based golf instructor wants to bring his lessons and gaming innovations to the Ann Arbor-area by 2021.
Kyle Morris, co-founder of Golfsuites, is looking to bring what he describes as a “Topgolf-like environment” to Washtenaw County, with food, entertainment and a tour-like game improvement academy. The business would offer a variety of coaching options, including programs on mental performance, fitness training, rehabilitation and a swing analysis.
“We have a partnership with the Golf Room in Ohio, where we’ll be bringing world class instruction to the GolfSuites customer,” Morris said. “We have the intentions of using this proprietary gaming technology to allow players to quantify and measure how good they’re progressing through their skill.”
The Golf Room is Morris’ golf-training business in Dublin, Ohio, where he runs a variety of summer programs, lessons and custom club fitting.
Morris began playing golf at 6 years old then toured for eight years. He later opened his coaching business, which serves children, recreational players and professionals on the PGA Tour. Golf Digest recognized Morris as one of the Best Young Teachers in America in 2016-2017.
Morris has not yet locked down a site in the Ann Arbor area and says he’s in search of 14- to 20-acre site. He says he’s looking to invest up to $50 million in facilities across the region.
“GolfSuites is being developed essentially as a facility that’s built for customer entertainment, where you can go out on a Friday or Saturday night, where you can hang out with a group of friends, but it’s got a whole layer to it that we’re building to suit the desires and passions of the avid golfer,” Morris said.
Topgolf, which offers similar golf-themed training and entertainment, opened an Auburn Hills location earlier this year.
Morris believes there’s room for a lot more golf entertainment centers in the region.
“If you look at the demand of what Topgolf ... and their wait lines, it seems like there’s a real need across the country for these facilities," Morris said. "The services and environment is going to be superior to the competitors.”
