Three golfers qualified for the 39th U.S. Mid-Amateur Golf Championship in the sectional round held Friday at the Lancaster Country Club.
Michael Brown (Maple Shade Township, N.J.), Dave Bunker (Canada) and Andrew Dagneau (Canada) finished as co-medalists with a 4-under 68.
The three qualified to be part of the field of 264 golfers that will compete in the Mid-Amateur championships, scheduled for Sept. 14-19 at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker and the CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
Local golfers Andrew Romano and Billy Hanes were named as alternates after winning a playoff round.
Romano will be the first alternate and Hanes will be the second alternate. The two each finished with a 3-under 69, good for a fourth-place tie.
Hanes won the State Four-Ball championship last year with his brother, David.
Romano’s brother, Thomas, led the field after the first half of play with a 32, one stroke under Brown and Bunker. He lost the lead after shooting a 37 in the second half and finished tied for fourth.
James Scorse, the 2013 and 2016 New York State Mid-Amateur champion, finished tied for 11th place with Buffalo District Mid-Amateur and Amateur champ Patrick Nealon. Both shot an even-par 72.
Last year’s state champion, Jamie Miller, finished tied for 21st after he shot a 3-over 75.
Several other local golfers competed in the sectional round. Andy Bernatovicz, John Boland, Nicholas Morreale and Tanner Horn finished tied for 14th place with a 1-over 73.
Michael Piccilo and Jacob Katz tied Miller for 21st with a 75. Sean Cannan and Kyle Harman tied for 25th with a 4-over 76, while Mark Drabik and Derek Roller tied for 32nd with a 5-over 77.
The final championship field will be determined after sectional play around the country concludes next Thursday.
