As I reflect on the year, I cannot help to think about a few comebacks.
You might not like Tiger Woods, but you have to give him credit for digging himself out of the pits and creating one of the greatest comebacks in golf history. Not only winning the Masters, but Tiger also tied Sam Snead’s record of 82 career PGA Tour victories with his win at the Zo Zo Championship in Japan. For someone who had to take so much time off for injuries and surgeries, his return has been unbelievable.
Then, the Presidents Cup. What a comeback for the United States team. I don’t think I have seen Tiger so happy. He was so excited to win and the whole team looked as if it was having so much fun. It was a joy to watch. My daughter is a senior talent booking producer at Golf Channel and she said she had never seen Tiger so upbeat, positive and fun on their set.
And how about the Buffalo Bills reaching the playoffs for the second time in three years?
So, what causes a comeback? Can you plan one? Create one? How long do they take?
As I am sure you have heard Bills coach Sean McDermott say, “Trust the process.” How hard can it be to “trust the process" when things don’t go your way?
Hard.
I want to encourage you to create your own comeback for 2020. It’s a new decade, a fresh start. I dare you to take another shot.
Here are three most important components to winning:
1. Discomfort as a path to change
People are motivated by two things – to stop pain or seek reward. I want to lose 20 pounds, or my doctor told me I have to lose 20 pounds or I will develop diabetes. I want to break 100, or I can’t keep shanking it.
Seek reward or stop pain.
Either one will work if it is big enough. Decide what your it is and make a commitment to it.
2. Self-assessment
Where are you now? How did you get here? Where do you want to go? Is it realistic? What do you need to do to get what you want?
If it has to do with your golf game, where is the ball going? Why does it do that? What have you done with the club that made the ball go there? How can you fix that?
I have a saying I use with students: "Just the facts, please." The ball goes where the face points. The only thing that touches the ball is the face. The only thing that touches the club is your hands. Guess who is holding the club?
No one tries to miss it on purpose. If you seek to understand, it will help you know how to fix it.
3. Total investment in the process
For this to happen, there must be trust. If you are seeking help from a professional and you do not trust them, ask them questions. Get answers. Trust me, if you have doubt, apprehension and fear while standing over the ball, you will not execute the shot correctly. Your lack of trust will be the reason you fail. It will have nothing to do with your golf swing. It will have everything to do with your doubt, apprehension, and fear. Your head.
I would find an instructor who you trust and ask him or her to help you make a comeback, to become the player you want to be. Ask them to help you create your process. Discuss your goals. Create a plan.
I challenge you to really look in the mirror. Why do you miss shots? Do you need to improve your skills? Your decision-making? Your focus? Your emotions? Become more self-sufficient?
Once you are willing to expose the elephants, they can’t harm you anymore. You can now defeat the demons.
I dare you to take another shot. It’s time to own it!
