Improvements to be made to the city’s driving range
The City of Midland has received a $50,000 donation from Octagon to make improvements to the driving range at Currie Municipal Golf Course.
Octagon, the sports marketing agency that oversees the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, is donating the money in junction with LPGA tournament that took place this past July in Midland. Since the LPGA will be back each year for the next four years, Octagon is looking to improve where the professional players practice.
During the week they were here in July, the golfers “extensively” used the city’s golf course for warming up and practice. So, Octagon has donated $50,000 to begin improving the driving range.
Specifically, the proposed improvements include expanding the driving range and the short game area to accommodate more users and sustain the grass quality for longer. In addition, the putting green and the east nine first t-box would be relocated, however, staying in the same general area of the golf course.
During Midland City Council’s regular meeting this week, Assistant City Manager David Keenan presented the donation so it could be implemented into the city’s budget. He said the city has internally been discussing driving range improvements for a while, though they never had the money to seriously consider it.
While the $50,000 donation should cover the cost of the engineering drawings and regulatory approvals for all the proposed improvements, it will only cover the cost of extending the tee box to the east, which is being called “phase one.”
The other phases — relocating the putting green and the east nine t-box and extending the short game area — will come as subsequent phases, as funding becomes available, Keenan said.
“The intent is to fund these improvements as additional gifts are submitted,” he said. “(Octagon) hopes to be able to do that annually so that’s the level of commitment that I think they put in writing at this point, but, in conversations they hope to be able to do this annually.”
Keenan said the city would try and stretch the money as far as possible, however, the actual cost of each phase won’t be known until the engineering drawings are done.
“We’re pretty confident, although we don’t have the numbers yet from the engineer, but speaking to our engineer, he’s relatively hopeful — I’ll put it that way — that the $50,000 is going to be able to take us through that entire phase (one),” Keenan said.
He said there are multiple options for funding the other phases, however, the city has no obligation to carry out any of the projects.
