World No. 1 Rory McIlroy will try to go back-to-back at the 2020 Players Championship against a stocked field of 144 players, 110 of whom have won a PGA Tour event. No one has ever repeated at the so-called "Fifth Major," which begins Thursday from iconic TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. McIlroy has finished in the top five in his last seven tournaments dating to last year, but are there other favorites like Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas or Adam Scott who should be atop your Fantasy golf rankings for the Players Championship 2020?
Thomas, the 26-year-old American who's ranked fourth in the world, is getting plenty of buzz based on his history at TPC Sawgrass. He tied for third here in 2016 and has made the cut in all five of his appearances. Which Fantasy golf sleepers should you target? And which Fantasy golf picks can lead you to a title? Before finalizing any lineups, check out the latest Fantasy golf rankings from data scientist Rick Gehman.
With his expansive database of golf statistics, course data and betting odds, Gehman creates advanced models and back-tests them constantly. These models produced 10 outright winners in the past year, including 50-1 Chez Reavie at the Travelers and 40-1 Patrick Reed at the Northern Trust among eight PGA Tour winners, plus a $10,000 DraftKings win at the Masters.
At the WGC-Mexico Championship last month, four of Gehman's top six golfers finished tied for sixth or better. Then at the Honda Classic, Gehman was higher than many on Sungjae Im, ranking him eighth, and the 21-year-old South Korean earned his first PGA Tour victory. Gehman's No. 2 golfer, Tommy Fleetwood, finished third.
Last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Gehman was very high on Bryson DeChambeau, ranking him third. The 26-year-old American promptly delivered with a fourth-place finish. That was just one of many stellar calls in Gehman's rankings.
Now Gehman, co-host of "The First Cut" podcast on CBS Sports, has revealed his top 30 players for the 2020 Players Championship over at SportsLine so you can crush your Fantasy golf leagues.
2020 Players Championship Fantasy golf picks
For the Players Championship 2020, Gehman is especially high on Webb Simpson, who went wire-to-wire to win this event two years ago. Simpson has dramatically improved his putting and enters this week hot, having finished in the top 10 five times in his last six events, including a victory at the Phoenix Open.
However, Gehman is staying far away from world No. 3 Brooks Koepka, who hurt his knee last year and hasn't looked the same since. Koepka has played three events this year, tying for 43rd at the Genesis Invitational, missing the cut at the Honda Classic, and tying for 47th at last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational. He's a golfer to fade in your Fantasy golf rankings.
How to set your Players Championship Fantasy golf rankings
Gehman also loves a player who's coming off a disastrous performance and has never won on the PGA Tour. This overlooked pro is tailor-made for TPC Sawgrass, has a strong track record there, and is poised for a huge bounceback performance. Gehman is sharing who it is, and his top 30 golfers in order, right here.
Who wins the 2020 Players Championship? Who are the top golfers to target this week? And which overlooked player can help you win your league? Visit SportsLine now to get Rick Gehman's Fantasy golf power rankings for the Players Championship, all from the data scientist who nailed WGC-Mexico.
