PHOTO PROVIDED Maintaining balance will lower your score.

Balance is one of the essential elements in the golf swing. A vast majority of golfers initiate the downswing with a quick and violent move, causing the body to lose its balance.

By no means, am I indicating you should swing slow. Smooth is the word. Allow the club to accelerate with a gradual buildup of speed, similar to pushing a child on a swing. Don’t jerk the golf club out of its natural plane.

With all of that said, maintaining balance requires practice and patience. The secret is to figure out how hard you can swing without losing the body’s center of gravity.

Athleticism plays a big part in how fast a golfer can swing and maintain balance.

To get the feel of the proper balance, swing a club while standing on a slippery surface while maintaining proper balance.

I suggest you practice swing in the morning dew while wearing your dress shoes, to get a feel for balance. Then repeat that feel when hitting a ball, begin the downswing with a smooth transition.

Don’t forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
