Golf tip: Making adjustments to correct your swing - Florida Today

Q: Enjoy your column and the great advice it provides. My Question. Lately, out of a clear blue sky, I’ve been “hitting the dirt” with a lot of my swings, taking way too much of a divot. Can’t seem to figure out what happened. Do you have any advice on how to figure out what’s going wrong and how to correct it? Thanks.

A: Based on your question it sounds like you are getting into position of hanging back in your swing.

Many times golfers will make a few bad swings and begin to panic with their swing mechanics and start to make adjustments with every swing which becomes a formula for disaster. Every golfer wants to see the ball travel up in the air and travel as far it can.

Unfortunately, if that doesn't happen you make adjustments to correct the fault. You're trying to help get the ball in the air instead of allowing the club to do it. I like to use this drill with my students that are having trouble striking solid shots. Go to a golf range that has a fairway bunker, draw a line in sand and place the ball on the front edge of the line.

Now, with your seven iron make some easy swings focusing on hitting the sand in FRONT of the line. By doing this you will have to get your weight going forward and the shaft leaning slightly forward at impact. You will quickly learn to make the adjustments to hit the ball first and the sand second, creating more solid strikes. Then, after you have hit some shots the correct way in the bunker, step out of the bunker and hit a few shots with the same technique.

Your timing will be better and your mechanics will be back to the way they use to be. Every golfer goes through highs and lows in their game, which is what makes golf challenging, but there is no better feeling than hitting that great shot. That’s what keeps us coming back.

Have fun and enjoy the game.
